We always cover the fireplace with sheets to prevent soot escaping into the room when cleaning the chimney.

This is the debris from a birds nest found in a customers chimney. If this had not been removed, then it could have caused a chimney fire once the fire was lit. Another example of why regular chimney sweeping is so important.
